Please take a moment to swoon over your new digs….
You probably have the following phrases engraved in your minds: “Team No Sleep”, “Sleep is for the Broke”, “While you’re sleeping, someone else is working.” Your social media feeds are flooded with inspirational quotes from Musicians, Entrepreneurs, and entertainment moguls that seem to practice the no sleep lifestyle. Somehow, we’ve managed to glorify not sleeping. I am guilty of succumbing to this false stigma, I mean, I’ve worked really hard and I would hate for someone to snatch it all away while I sleep… right? The messaging we are receiving every day, in essence, says “if you want to be successful, don’t sleep.”
So how much of this is true and how much of this is societal BS? The experts at University of Miami Health System (UHealth) say that studies continue to show that even moderate amounts of sleep deprivation can produce impairments in adults equivalent to being legally drunk. Additionally, chronic fatigue from lack of sleep can also make you more vulnerable to infections and illnesses. Now, let that sink in…
If your purpose for being an advocate for #teamnosleep is ambition, how productive can you really be if the important decisions you need to make everyday are made while you’re mentally impaired? Both our brains & bodies need time for recovery. According to the experts, lack of sleep sets you up for irrational choices, non-optimal performance, and injuries that could derail everything you’ve worked for. It’s also been said that sleep deficiency can age your skin, cause weight gain, and decrease your sex drive– ahem, heard of getting your “Beauty Sleep”?
Head over to UHealth’s blog post to read more about the connection between sleep and athletic performance, what the experts advise – and what Lebron James and Roger Federer have in common.
As a momma-preneur, I’ve been part of #teamnosleep for the last 7 years. It’s gotten so bad, that I fight my sleep at night because there is one more task that I could accomplish, or one more article that I could read to give myself a competitive edge. Thanks to my friends at UHealth for educating me on the power behind sleep. Sleep should not be associated with guilt and lack of sleep should not be the measure for success. As someone whose professional life depends on their physical performance, mental creativity, while advocating self care; I find myself not practicing what I preach. From this day forward, I vow to be #teamsleep and you should join this team too.
Lipstick is such a big part of the Vixen Workout. Women are encouraged to wear lipstick to workout… huh?! For a lot of us, wearing red lipstick is a bold move.
Do you feel sexier when you wear red lipstick?
What is it about this powerful shade that makes women everywhere feel like the ultimate Bawse? It goes well beyond our love for selfies!
For women of all ages, from all walks of life, the red lip is not just a symbol of feminism and beauty, but of empowerment. It’s also a reminder of how we keep our “ish” together, no matter how tough life can get!
The History of Red Lipstick
During World War II, cosmetic advertisers introduced politically charged ad campaigns for colors such as “Victory Red,” encouraging women to embrace beauty upkeep as part of their civic duty. “Beauty as a Duty” became a confidence building motto in the US. The concept of beauty as duty was used as a tool for promoting patriotism and encouraging women to become more active in the war effort. Women depicted in propaganda and advertisements always had perfect hair and makeup, even when they were shown as soldiers and factory workers. Being beautiful was seen as a way to keep up morale for the soldiers fighting the bad guys. “Victory Red” was literally part of putting on a brave face. It symbolizes one of the reasons why we are fighting—the precious right of women to be feminine and lovely under any circumstances.
Throughout history, the red lip has been iconic, from Elizabeth Taylor, to Marilyn Monroe, to first ladies such as Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama. We love these women, not for their glamorous choices, but for what they stood for as they made such bold choices: independence, strength, and ambition.
Lipstick and Confidence: The hue that belongs to you
It’s no secret-we love for you to get glammed before doing it for the gram before, during, and after class. In a 2011 study by Procter & Gamble, researchers from Harvard and Boston University found that women felt more confident while wearing makeup! They were also perceived as more competent and reliable in a professional setting.
No matter the shade that makes you want to come out and play, what’s important is you, our fierce vixens, feel confident in whatever color you put on your lips! When you pick a shade that you feel great in, that’s what you makes you so amazingly you!
This Saturday, July 29th, is the celebration of two things we adore: National Dance Day and National Lipstick Day! We encourage all of you to come wearing your favorite shade of lip ( RED would be preferable!) and come ready to dance and serve face with your Vixen Army friends.
As someone whose been making mix-tapes since the 5th grade, I have my playlist making techniques down to a science. At the Vixen Workout, the playlist makes or breaks the class. You need to know how to bring the energy up, what songs to place where, when to bring it back down and everything in between.Making a great playlist is pretty much an art form in and of itself. In this post, I’m going to share some tips on how to make your own killer playlist.
THE BIOLOGY OF MUSIC AND EXERCISE
According to recent studies from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, there’s real science behind creating effective workout playlists. The right songs can function as an important tool in improving your athletic performance – by motivating you and tricking your brain into feeling less tired.
An Optimum Tempo Between 120 to 140 BPM (Beats Per Minute)
Personal preferences aside, this is a good workout song’s optimum tempo range because it roughly corresponds to the average person’s heart rate during a routine workout. A runner, however, may need songs with a higher tempo of 147 to 160 BPM. Most dance songs and many rock songs are already in the 120-140 BPM range. Studies also found that music distracts people from pain and fatigue, elevates mood, increases endurance, reduces perceived effort and may even promote metabolic efficiency. To find out the BPM’s of songs you want to add to your playlist, checkout this site.
HOW DO I FIND THE BPM’S TO A SONG?
To find out the BPM’s of songs I want to use, I use a site called Song BPM. Once you’ve calculated the BPM of a song, you can generally store it in the ID3 tag of the music file. For example, getting info on a song in iTunes will let you enter the BPM. Using iTunes as an example, you can then sort your music by BPM and choose the songs you want that fall into the 120-140 BPM range.”
IS THERE A BLUEPRINT FOR CREATING A PLAYLIST?
Remember that if you are working out, you need to begin with a warm-up.The first 3 songs of your playlist are your “warm-up” songs. They should gradually increase in tempo and speed to get muscles warmed up.
Good options to begin your playlist are:
1: “Party Ain’t Over”/ Pitbull feat. Usher
2: “Champions”/ Kanye West feat. (everyone)
3. “Jungle Bae”/ Major Lazer
For the middle of your playlist, put songs that make you feel a certain way.For example: if you’re going through a break up or a tough time, having songs with lyrics that are relatable to what your going through helps your mind not think about the fact that you have 30 minutes left.To be clear, I don’t mean ballads for the middle of your playlist.I mean adding songs that make you feel like a bad-ass in the middle and then the then slowly decrease in tempo so as to assist in a proper cool-down period. the slower paced ones at the end for a cool down.
Need some help finding music? Make sure to follow some of my playlists on Spotify.

MAJOR KEY ALERT: Out with the old, in with the HEALTHY
From NOT, to a simple (and delicious) SWAP. Whoever said you couldn’t have your cake and eat it too didn’t try hard enough, because I’ll let you in on a secret – DIETITIANS LOVE CAKE! Too good to be true? Keep on reading… With each of these “swaps” you are set up to slay unnecessary fat and sugar plus gain fiber, protein, phytochemicals, and antioxidants, without any #foodcrazy (you know – that guilty voice that prattles on about how you don’t DESERVE to eat)…
The allure of nutrition fads, gimmicks, and trends is remarkable. Even I, a registered dietitian with a Master’s degree, years of clinical experience in an academic hospital, and published research have fallen prey at times (hence: the four-hundred-dollar liver “cleanse” pack I purchased from a holistic doctor rotting under my bed). As the dietitian, I stand for science. I stand for what I call “Earth Foods,” (foods with minimal processing that come from the earth or a living creature on Earth) which embody the science of nutrition.
I’ve had countless exasperating, misguided clients who simply do not understand that nutrition is, at its core, a science. Mine usually sit across from me in my office and earnestly “admit” that they eat “too much” fruit and attribute mango intake to their weight gain. This is laughable. Fruit, or any Earth Food, is not to be vilified! It’s poor food preparation, poor food planning, portion distortion, emotional/psychosocial factors, and poor food choices over time that create negative weight outcomes. Some of my clients balk at eating a single date because there is just “so much” sugar but will guzzle Diet Coke, a known metabolic disruptor, by the gallon. They’ll reject my promise that you can eat an entire avocado every single day and that you don’t have to measure out blueberries, but will imbibe “Alien Foods” – foods that are NOT from this planet, and avoid the big picture – changing your nutrition LANDSCAPE.
SO: Here’s my list of DROPS and SWAPS, dietitian-style. Because being healthy is about balance, not going BALLISTIC about veganism or Paleo or alkaline diets or your arm fat.
DROP the white pasta and SWAP it for ‘zoodles’ (zucchini noodles) or spaghetti squash. For the ‘zoodles’ buy a $10 spiralizer (available on Amazon) and get to spiralizing (also works with yellow squash, carrots, cucumbers.. you get the gist). For the spaghetti squash, cut in half, scoop out the seeds, rub with olive oil, salt & pepper, and bake for 35-45 mins in a 400°F oven. Once tender scrape a fork along the inside and see spaghetti appear in front of your eyes!
DROP the ice cream and SWAP is for “nice-cream”. This can be in the form of frozen bananas blended with cacao powder or PB2 peanut butter powder, or frozen strawberries blended with some plain yogurt!
DROP the white flour and SWAP it for almond, coconut, oat or buckwheat flour. These flours can be used in replacement of white flour in a ton of recipes.
DROPground beef and SWAP it for beans. Whether it be navy beans, chickpeas, kidney beans or lentils, they can ALL be used in chilis, pasta sauces (perfect with your ‘zoodles’!) and soups!
DROP the mayo and SWAP it out for hummus. Adding hummus to wraps, sandwiches, or even just as a dipping sauce is an easy way to add the perfect combination of fiber, fat and protein to your diet.
DROP the cream cheese on your morning (Ezekiel) toast, and SWAP it for unsweetened nut butter or ½ an avocado. Not enticing enough? Top the nut butters with sliced banana or berries and cinnamon, and top the avocado with pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, feta cheese, an egg or even lox!
DROP the fruit juice and SWAP it for the WHOLE fruit. I promise you will feel 10x more satisfied after eating an apple (skin and all), than after chugging a glass of apple juice (which FYI is the equivalent of four apples! Who are you, Johnny Appleseed?!)
RECAP: Making these simple and effective swaps in your daily diet will contribute to BIG changes. You’ll feel better, while still never feeling deprived but feeling like you are THRIVING.
Regina Merson is the founder and creator of Reina Rebelde, a new emerging cosmetics line taking the beauty world by storm, whose mission is all about celebrating the fierce cultural dualities of today’s Latinas. We at #VixenArmy are obsessed with Regina’s unapologetic love for her culture while owning her passion for all things beauty so much that she left a stable law career to launch the makeup line.
Check out Regina’s story below and be ready to meet your new #girlboss crush!
Who is Regina Merson?
“This is a tough one to answer, lol…I’m a proud Mexicana, born in Guadalajara, but immigrated to the United States when I was 9 years old. The transition from Mexico to the U.S. was tough for me, so I used school and education as my outlet. I became a certified bookworm. I took a liking to law and made it my goal to become a lawyer. I graduated from Yale University for undergrad and received my law degree from the University of Chicago. I spent nearly six years as a bankruptcy attorney, and although I’m beyond grateful for the experience and the incredible people that were part of the journey, I felt that my passion lived in makeup. I would spend parts of my day dreaming of lipsticks, but when I would tell the people closest to me of my idea to start a makeup line, they thought I was absolutely crazy. How could I leave a stable career I worked so hard for, for something unsure in an already saturated market? But I personally felt that no makeup brand understood me as a bilingual, bicultural Latina and the beautiful cultural relationship that Latinas have with makeup. So after an unfortunate round of layoffs at the law firm I was working at, I took it as a sign that it was time to dive head first to bring Reina Rebelde to life!
What motivates you to succeed and just keep pushing forward?
My motivation right now is simply to not disappoint myself. In my past career, so much of my success was to make other people happy, often at the expense of my own aspirations. Now, my sheer motivation is creating a brand that I feel is an extension of myself, my passions and what I authentically share with other women. When I hear that other women and Latinas connect with Reina Rebelde and the products, that’s all the motivation I need.
Why did you feel like you needed to start a makeup line, and specifically, one for the Latina consumer?
I felt like there was a gap in the beauty industry, specifically with how beauty brands address Latinas, which is what inspired me. You always see beauty brands address Latinas or show Latinas in a very one-dimensional way, which is the complete opposite of who Latinas are. There are so many layers/dualities to Latinas. Even with the brand name “Reina Rebelde,” which translates to “Rebel Queen,” I wanted to capture the unique dualities Latinas have to manage in their lives here in the United States (and elsewhere). Reina/Queen is a term of endearment for us, but it’s also accurate to our sense of self and relationship to our beauty. At the same time, there is a lot of fire inside of us, breaking barriers/trailblazing, which is where the Rebelde/Rebel comes from. A Reina Rebelde is many things at all times, but above all, she is always stunning and fierce in her pursuit of life. For us, it is never a decision of whether we will be a Reina/Queen or Rebelde/Rebel, we are always both.
What was the transition from corporate bankruptcy attorney to entrepreneur?
The transition was exciting and energizing, but also terrifying and full of highs and lows. Like any new beginning, I believe there is a lot of blind faith one has to have in believing in yourself and trusting your ability to figure things out that are foreign and new. But there was so much positive energy that naturally comes with any new beginning, especially one you’re really passionate about, and I think it’s so important to use that energy to your benefit.
What advice do you have for women trying to start their own businesses?
Make sure you have a true passion for what it is you want to do. Having your own business is very hard. The journey is paved with so many roadblocks and obstacles along the way, and it is that fire in your gut that will help keep you going in the harder moments. And really important is to try to connect with other female entrepreneurs and get their support as a mentor. It is great to talk to people who have been through the process because, no matter the industry, the road is very similar.
What’s your favorite quote?

Describe each moment:
When did you meet? We met about 3 years ago because he messaged me on Instagram after recognizing me from an old blog post featuring curvy women.
How did you meet? We flirting on Instagram for a bit and decided to meet for coffee.
What was your first impression of him?He was tall! He is a whole foot taller than me, maybe more. We actually didn’t get it off in person. It was weird. The date felt forced. We left feeling ok about it but decided to continue talking over the phone and texting and had a much better 2nd date at a Mexican bar! How did he win your heart? He was always a gentlemen. And passionate about God and his career goals.
Where was your first date?Well I’ll go with my second bc our coffee date was awkward. But he took me to this hole in the wall Mexican joint that to this day has the best guacamole I’ve ever tasted! They had a karaoke machine and so he proceeded to turn it on and serenade me. He has an amazing voice.
Where was your first kiss? After our second date before going home.
When did you realize you were in love? Around the holidays, about 3 months in. Something about the holidays that make you fall in love.
Who first said, “I love you”?I don’t remember! Haha I think him? Most romantic moment since you’ve met. One of my favorite dates was going to have spiked coffee and watch live jazz, then to the IFC theater to watch the Oscar-nominated foreign short film nominees. It was a cultural and romantic experience! Most awkward or embarrassing moment since you’ve met. Omg, I totally fell down a flight of stairs 4 months into dating and he had to pick me up and bring me to his place to have him and his mother bandage me up. That was my second time meeting his mom!
3 things you have in common Our love for 80s synth pop bands like Wham and Culture Club. Our love for travel Our love for Christ
3 things you don’t have in common Certain political views Olives, yuck He doesn’t like ratchet music so that’s my escape when I’m alone in the car!
Top 3 wedding moments Our first dance because it was amazing and choreographed and we spent a couple days working on it. Me and my dad’s first dance because I get my dancing skills from him and we just laughed the whole time. Our midnight countdown into confetti blast since our wedding was this past NYE.
Fill in the blank: I got 99 problems but ??? Love ain’t one!
How hard was it to write vows? No because we didn’t! Haha we went traditional and were happy with that.
Describe your personal evolution as a woman throughout your relationship. Well I became a mom first before a wife so becoming a mom changes you. You become selfless and nurturing and …a little more stressed. But my maturity level has changed and the fact that my husband is such an amazing father and partner in crime helps me become a better parent and wife
As a woman, what do you think is the key to finding love? Patience! I’ve dated some lame guys, even damaging to my aura. Guys that didn’t suit me but I feared to be lonely. I think it’s ok to be alone and wait to a good guy. Dating casually is fine but don’t commit yourself to someone if you don’t feel right about something.
Top 3 tricks or advice to keep love alive in a relationship regardless of time, ups or downs. Don’t go to bed angry, it’ll be hard to sleep and you don’t wanna wake up upset! Pray! If you believe in God, I cannot tell you how much that has been essential in our relationship. Keeping God at the center of it all. Mix things up for date night. Don’t become the couch couple. Try to do something fun once a month. Last month we went to Art Battle NYC and had a blast!
